Northgate Signs Teenage Striker in Record League Deal

Northgate United confirmed the signing of 17-year-old striker Ines Duarte on Friday, a transfer that breaks the Meridian Premier League’s previous record fee by a wide margin and instantly makes her one of the most closely watched young players in the competition.

Duarte, who scored 24 goals in the second-tier league last season, becomes the youngest player ever to command a fee at this level. Neither club disclosed the exact transfer amount, but two people familiar with the negotiations, who were not authorized to discuss the figures publicly, said it comfortably exceeded the league’s prior record.

“The money isn’t going to score goals for her. What happens in the first three months, when everyone in the stadium is watching to see if she was worth it — that’s the real test,” said former Northgate captain Owen Bratt, now a television pundit.

Duarte herself struck a measured tone at her unveiling, deflecting questions about the fee and instead focusing on the opportunity to play regularly at the top level. “I’m not here to prove a number. I’m here to play football,” she said through a translator.

Immediate impact expected

Northgate manager Priya Sandhu said Duarte would be available for selection as early as this weekend’s fixture against Castlebridge, though she declined to confirm whether the teenager would start.
