How It Started
A Wire Desk of Three (2016)
Elena Osei and Tomas Vance met filing stories for the same regional wire service, both frustrated that the same three desks — politics, markets, and sports — got all the resources while everything else was an afterthought. In 2016 they left to start something smaller and more deliberate: a single online edition with one rule, borrowed from Elena’s first editor: “File it straight, or don’t file it.”
Neither had run a newsroom before. Elena had spent six years on the world desk at her old paper; Tomas had covered markets and, before that, worked two years as a fact-checker, a background that shaped how strict The Meridian’s editorial standards would eventually become.
The First Beat
The first hire was a Harbor City stringer covering the port strikes nobody else was following closely — the story that got The Meridian its first wire pickup and, eventually, its first bureau.
What Readers Asked For
Early readers mostly wanted more sports and business coverage. Culture and Opinion desks came later, once the newsroom had the staff to do them properly instead of as an afterthought.
A Note on the Name
“The Meridian” refers to the line every timezone crosses — a small nod to the fact that a story breaking anywhere is, eventually, a story everywhere.
Growing Into a Newsroom
2018 — Six Desks
World, Business, Tech, Sports, Culture, and Opinion each got a dedicated editor by 2018, replacing the single shared wire desk. Browse what each desk covers on our homepage.
2020 — Correspondent Bureaus
Once the wire-service stringer network wasn’t enough, The Meridian opened its first full-time correspondent bureaus. Compare them on the bureaus page.
2022–2024 — Advertising and Subscriptions
Advertising accounts and reader subscriptions both launched to fund the growing correspondent network. The advertising program started in 2022; the subscription tiers followed in 2024.
What We Believe

- Opinion columns are clearly labeled and never mixed into news reporting.
